The Connection, Health,
and Technology Lab

at UBC Okanagan

The CHAT Lab is led by Dr. Susan Holtzman, a Professor of Psychology at UBCO and

Licensed Psychologist in British Columbia.

We are a curious, supportive, and forward-thinking research group exploring how social connection, health, and technology intersect to shape people’s lives.

Using cutting-edge research methods, our research aims to understand how people adapt, connect, and thrive in the face of both everyday stressors and chronic illness, including chronic pain. We are particularly interested in how the rapidly evolving digital landscape—from texting and social media to mobile health technologies—can transform our social relationships, influence well-being, and open up new possibilities for improving health.

Our lab has a strong focus on interdisciplinary collaboration and community engagement.  We welcome you to check out our website and see what we are up to!

Lab Updates

Dr. Susan Holtzman, together with CHAT Lab alumni Drs. Diana Lisi and Rebecca Godard, and UBC Professor of Psychology Dr. Anita DeLongis published results of an experiment comparing different modes of supportive communication, finding that text messaging resulted in less positive emotional outcomes.
